High-Dose Rate Brachytherapy

HDR

What is HDR?

HDR Brachytherapy treatments are given by utilizing a temporary, internal radioactive source. Traditionally used to treat gynecological and prostate cancers, HDR Brachytherapy uses small, radioactive “seeds” that remain inside the patient for up to 20 minutes and deliver radioactive therapy.

What does that mean for me?

In traditional Brachytherapy, “seeds” may be left in your body for up to two weeks. The short duration and subsequent removal of the radioactive “seeds” in HDR Brachytherapy minimizes your risk to other people, such as pregnant women or young children, since there is no radioactivity in your body after the procedure.
