HEMATOLOGY

What is Hematology?

Hematology is the study of blood and blood disorders. Much like tumors, blood disorders can be benign or malignant, and are diagnosed through routine blood work, genetic profiling, or special testing.

The physicians of Cancer Specialists of North Florida are trained in accredited subspecialty fellowship programs to diagnose, manage, and treat patients with hematological diseases. We provide targeted and molecular therapies and collaborate with state-of-the-art laboratories for genetic testing, comprehensive clotting system evaluation, flow cytometry, and hematopathogy evaluation.

A lower-than-normal white blood cell count.
Leukocytosis
A higher-than-normal white blood cell count.
Monoclonal Gammopathy
A condition in which an abnormal protein is produced by plasma cells and can, in some cases, develop into a blood cancer.
Neutropenia
A low number of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell that helps fight infection.
Pancytopenia
A condition in which all three types of blood cells—red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets—are low.
Polycythemia
A higher-than-normal number of red blood cells or an elevated hemoglobin or hematocrit level.
Pulmonary Embolism
A blood clot that travels to and becomes lodged in an artery in the lungs.
Secondary Polycythemia
Polycythemia that occurs as a result of an underlying condition or low oxygen levels.
Thrombocytopenia
A lower-than-normal platelet count.
Thrombocytosis
A higher-than-normal platelet count.
Thrombophilia
A condition in which the blood has an increased tendency to form clots.
Vitamin B12 Deficiency Anemia
