SATISH SHANBHAG, MD

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Satish Shanbhag is board certified in hematology and oncology and practices at our Fleming Island location. Born in India, Dr. Shanbhag obtained his medical degree from Bangalore Medical College in Bangalore, India.

Like most, Dr. Shanbhag has had personal experiences with cancer which pushed him to become an oncologist. “I have been on the other side and seen what cancer looks like from the viewpoint of a son and grandson” Dr. Shanbhag says. Because of this, he views and treats every patient like he would a close family member.  “It is critical that discoveries in cancer care in the last decade, such as immunotherapy and targeted therapy reach every patient who could benefit and make a real impact on their lives”.

A believer in patient-centered care and shared decision making, Dr. Shanbhag is proud to work at Cancer Specialists of North Florida, saying “I am very privileged to be part of a team of healthcare specialists who work night and day to improve our patient’s lives while running a robust research and education program”. He believes that the core mission of oncologists is to help patients live longer and healthier lives; “helping patients transition into long term survivorship is a special feeling – we should pray and fight for more of these moments”.

Before joining Cancer Specialists of North Florida, Dr. Shanbhag was Associate professor of oncology and Medical Director of the cancer center at the famed Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. He is nationally recognized for his expertise, particularly for blood related cancers and conditions and has numerous articles, presentations at conferences and book chapters to his name. He has also won numerous regional and national awards for clinical excellence and teaching.

An outdoor and fitness enthusiast, Dr. Shanbhag and his wife and two daughters enjoy visiting national parks, biking, and hiking.
